APPELLATION

Graves-titre

The name Margaux is magical and reflects a history of winemaking going back one thousand years. As with most vineyards close to the city of Bordeaux, wine production began during the Gallo-Roman period.
Records from the early 18th century refer to numerous winegrowing estates. While the château, whose name is eponymous with the appellation, already had a long history of selling wine, it was only in the late 18th century that other vineyard owners became aware of the value of their land and introduced the production and ageing methods that gave rise to the Margaux great growths.
It took more than a century after the famous 1855 classification for this large, complex region to put conflicts between communes behind it and for the rigorously delimited Margaux appellation to be recognised.
